The Good Samaritan Medical Clinic, located at 139 Church Street in Chester, SC, was founded in May 2002 to provide free medical services, pharmacy and counseling to citizens of Chester who are at least 18 years of age and do not have Medicare, medical insurance, a medical provider, a prescription card/program, and who do not qualify for Medicaid. During 2005 the Clinic experienced over 9,100 visits for services and acquired 300 new patients, bringing the patient total to over 1,450.

Volunteers:

The majority of the staff of GSMC is composed of volunteer doctors, nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists, counselors and clerical personnel from the community.

Holding Medical Clinics three Tuesdays and two Saturdays a month, a New Patient Clinic once a month, drawing our own labs two mornings a week, dispensing medications two afternoons a week, and handling phone calls and walk-ins from 8:30 - 5:00pm daily, means there is a something for everyone to do, no matter what your skill level.

Patients:

Those seeking to apply for services at the Clinic may do so any weekday afternoon between the hours of 2:00pm - 4:30pm. They should bring all their medications, proof of income for one month for anyone who lives in the house, and a copy of two current utility bills.

Established patients are seen by appointment only. Appointments can be made by calling 803-385-6332.

Elder Overview - Elder Process

Chester Second Baptist Church

Elder Selection Process

2007-2008

For our church to comply with the scripture, we need to have more than one elder to lead our church family. The following process will be observed to implement elders.

Chester Second Baptist Church will begin the process of qualifying men anointed by God to serve as elders. As you know, elders provide Biblical oversight, direction, and care for the church family.

1 Timothy 3:1 states, "If anyone desires the office of overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do." Based on this verse, we believe that men should desire the position, based on the call that God has for their lives. As a result, men desiring the position must contact me to begin the process of Biblical qualification.

In order to clearly instruct the church family on the Biblical qualifications, service, and responsibilities of elders, a packet has been created for those desiring consideration. The packet includes:

A Process and Schedule Overview.

A study by Fred G. Zaspel entitled, Spiritual Leaders in the Local Church - Who are they? What are they to do? What are we to think of them?

A copy of an Elder's Covenant that further reveals the function of elders here at CSBC and the requirements of that service.

Publications to verify the good reputation of the candidate outside of the church based on 1 Timothy 3:7

I will be receiving candidates beginning November 1 through November 30. Candidates will meet with me through the months of December and January to study the qualifications and responsibilities of elders to ensure that each man is called, gifted, and ready to serve as elder. Once qualified, I will present the men to the church family for comment. If issues surface, an attempt will be made to reconcile the issue unless the issue is of a nature that would disqualify a candidate from service. Elder ordination is set for Sunday, March 2, 2008.

I want to emphasize that this is a serious decision and should not be made without prayer and careful consideration.

Steve

BULLETIN ARTICLE AND NEWS & REPORTER ARTICLES (ELDER COMMENTS)

These articles will run in the church bulletin and the News & Reporter during the month of May to allow the church and community to comment on the candidates for elder. If issues surface, an attempt will be made to reconcile the issue unless the issue is of a nature that would disqualify a candidate from service.

BULLETIN ARTICLES

Elder Presentation:

Pastor Steve Bishop would like to present the following men as qualified candidates for eldership here at CSBC. These men underwent two months of study and are ready to be presented to the church family for comment. 1 Timothy 3:2 & 7 states that an elder must be above reproach and must have a good reputation with those outside the church. At this time, if you do not believe these men meet the Biblical qualifications for an elder, please present your objection to Pastor Steve Bishop in writing. Written comments will be received through February 20, 2008 and may be mailed or put in the drop boxes at the back of the auditorium.

Chester Second Baptist Church Elder CovenantTheir Descriptions

While the terms elder, bishop, and pastor consistently refer to the same office the term "elder" emphasizes the man's character as being mature. "Bishop" emphasizes the man's function as ruler, overseer, and manager. It stresses what he does. "Pastor" emphasizes the man's work of caring, guarding, protecting, feeding, and leading. It stresses how he leads and rules and his attitude in doing it. All three terms refer to the same office but merely emphasize a different aspect of it.I Timothy 3:1-7

1. Blameless. The Greek term (anepilemptos) signifies "not able to be taken hold of," that is, above reproach, unassailable. It suggests that he is truly worthy of his good reputation. This word does not mean sinless or faultless, but it indicates that his character and piety are unassailable. There are no glaring kinks in his armor. This qualification is basic. It is basic in that it is so broad and all-inclusive that all the remaining qualifications are gathered up into it, and they expand on it.

2. Husband of one wife, or more accurately, a one woman man (mias gunaikos andra). This is not, as some imagine, a requirement that all elders be married, although that the elder (bishop) is married may well be Paul's assumption. Nor does this qualification concern the subject of divorce specifically. Rather it is a moral requirement: he must be a "one woman kind of man," a man who is not flirtatious and does not have eyes for all the women but is faithful to his own wife. Incidentally, this is one qualification that can never be filled by a woman. No matter how godly and gifted the woman may be, she can never be the husband of one wife, a one woman man. Paul requires that only men be elders, contemporary objections notwithstanding (cf. I Timothy 2:12; I Corinthians 14:34).

3. Vigilant or temperate. This word (nephalios) originally implied abstinence from alcohol but came to have a figurative sense signifying "sober" or "sober-minded," "clear-headed." In other words he is alert, cautious, circumspect.

4. Sober. This word (sophron) speaks of self control. It implies the ideas of thoughtful, sensible, sane. He is not always the clown; he is serious minded.

5. Of good behavior. This means "orderly, well arranged" (kosmios). His mind and inner man are in good order and are evident by his outward living and his demeanor.

6. Given to hospitality. This term (philoxenos) literally means "lover of strangers" and implies the ideas of hospitality, generosity to guests, and openness to all, not a select few only. His front door is always open and his welcome mat is always out, especially for the people under his care. Nor is he hesitant to have others view him in his home life.

7. Apt to teach. While some elders are more gifted than others and while some may be given more to the public ministry of the Word, all elders must be "skillful in teaching" nonetheless. This qualification is often minimized but only to the detriment of the church. Good character is essential, but that alone will not replace skillful teaching.

This qualification implies that the elder have a superior grasp of the Word of God and a resolved commitment to teaching. He must have proven himself to be able to set forth the Word of God with a measure of effectiveness. Furthermore, he must be a diligent student of the Scriptures, with a passion for truth and willing to "labor" in the Word (kopiao; I Timothy 5:17; I Thessalonians 5:12. This word, as the apostle uses it often, implies a thorough diligence in the work of God, in these passages the preparation and ministering of the Word of God specifically). If a pastor is to feed his flock, he must have some ability to communicate the Word, and he must have attained some degree of knowledge of it.

8. Not given to wine. This term (paroinos, from para, beside, and oinos wine) signifies literally, "not [one who lingers] beside [his] wine." That is, he is not addicted to wine. He can control it, it does not control him.

9. No striker. An elder must be in control of self (see number 4 above) and further must not be "given to blows" (me pletes) or given to violence. He must not be pugnacious or easily riled. He must not be the kind of man who wears a chip on his shoulder or who has a quick temper.

10. But patient (next in order of Greek text). In contrast to being violent the elder is "lenient" and gentle, genial, conciliatory, forbearing, equitable.

11. Not a brawler (amachos, again following the order of the Greek text). Neither is the elder contentious. He is "not a fighter, averse to fighting." This qualification probes deeper than number 9 above: not only does he refrain from fighting, but he is not even inclined to that sort of thing, whether physically or verbally. He does not fight or quarrel.

12. Not greedy of filthy lucre. This term (aphilarguros) signifies "not a lover of money, not fond of money." Earthly treasure is not his goal, and he is not in the ministry for money. This further implies, then, that he is generous, not overly-possessive of his material blessings.

13. One that ruleth well his own house having his children in subjection with all gravity. The elder is not run by an unruly wife or family; rather he rules his home well. Accordingly his children are obedient, submissive. He is "grave," dignified and courteous. The picture is that of a man who is gentle and kind but having unquestioned rule.

This qualification is expanded upon; an explanation is given: "for if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?" Here Paul argues from the lesser to the greater. Every man should rule his house well; if this man can not, how could we expect him to rule the church? A man who can not rule his own home well is not only unfit but unable to rule in the church.

14. Not a novice. He is not "newly planted," a new convert. The idea of age is obviously involved, but the emphasis is on maturity, whether he is eighteen (e.g., Charles Spurgeon) or fifty. Nor does maturity come automatically with a B.A. degree, even if it is from a Christian college.

A man may be gifted with great and unusual abilities, but if he is not yet mature, he may become "lifted up with pride" and "fall into the condemnation of the devil." A man taking such a responsibility before he is ready for it surely approaches pride which could bring disaster upon him and those under his care also. Maturity is essential.

15. A good report of them who are without. He must have a good reputation with those outside the church. He must be one who has a good name in the community. He may be persecuted because of his holy life (II Timothy 3:12), but he must be recognized as having high character and good and honest behavior.Titus 1:6-9

Turning now to Titus 1:6-9, we find that the qualifications are basically parallel. Only those not found in I Timothy will be examined here.

16. Blameless (anegkletos). Basically the same as I Timothy 3:1 although not the same word. The elder must be "above reproach, without indictment."

17. Having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly. Again basically the same as I Timothy 3:4-5 but adds the idea of the children's faith: they are not only well behaved and well disciplined, but they also are believers. Their life follows the faith.

18. Blameless as the steward of God. "Blameless" is the same as I Timothy 3:2 but this adds the idea of stewardship to it. He must be a good manager of the things which God has given him.

19. Not self-willed. An elder must not be obstinate, stubborn, or unwilling to listen to others. He must not always insist on his own point of view or rights. He is rather "others-willed" and is concerned for the feelings and rights of others.

20. Not soon angry. He is not inclined to anger. He is not quick-tempered.

21. Not given to filthy lucre. This term (me aischrokerdes) signifies "not greedy of shameful gain." The elder must not be one who is willing to make money by questionable methods. Again (as number 12 above), his focus is not on material things but spiritual.

22. A lover of good men. This translation is too restrictive. The word (philagathos) implies much more; he is "a lover of that which is good," whether men or women or things or truth itself.

23. Just. He is "righteous," fair, impartial, objective, able to make decisions based upon principle alone.

24. Holy. An elder must be a "devout" man (osios).

25. Temperate. He must be "self-controlled, self-mastered," able to control impulsive passions. He is subject to the will of God.

26. Holding fast the faithful Word. This implies both a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures and a commitment to it. He is stable in the faith in every respect so that he can be trusted to live what he teaches and "refute those who contradict."

These are the qualifications which must be filled by each elder. Specific Instructions & Commands

*In Acts 6:4 the apostles give matters of lesser concern to others so that they may give themselves "to prayer and to the ministry of the Word." This verse is significant in that it views prayer as one half of the elders' ministry. Elders must teach and pray.

*Throughout Paul's first letter to Timothy (properly called a "pastoral epistle" because of its purpose to give instruction concerning the ministry) he speaks over and again of doctrine and teaching (1:3, 10; 3:2; 4:6, 13, 14, 16; 5:17; etc.). His second letter to Timothy emphasizes the same (1:6, 8, 13; 2:2; etc.), as well as his letter to Titus (1:9; 2:1; etc.). Elders are to teach.

*According to Acts 20:20 elders are responsible for both public and private teaching.

*Elders are to contend for the faith, refuting and rebuking false teachers (I Timothy 1:18; Jude 3; Titus 1:9-16).

*Elders are to guard their people from errors and sins and dangers of all kinds, both from within and without (Acts 20:28-31; Hebrews 13:7; I Timothy 4:16).

*Elders are to exhort (Titus 1:9; II Timothy 4:2), which combines all the ideas of encouragement, comfort, persuasion, counseling, teaching, rebuking, etc.

*Elders are to rule (I Peter 5:1-2; I Timothy 5:17).

*Elders are to lead both by precept and example (I Timothy 4:12; I Peter 5:3).

While all elders do not have identical duties, it is the responsibility of elders to lead and feed, rule and teach. Within this basic guideline are many other responsibilities (such as fasting, guarding, exhorting, etc.). It is the inescapable duty of each presbytery (body of elders) to serve its church in this way. This is God's prescribed method of equipping His church. Nothing, but nothing, must be allowed to distract from the God-given duties. The church cannot afford it.Divine Appointment

The Fact of It

In Acts 20:28 Paul tells the elders of the church of Ephesus that the "Holy Spirit has made you bishops." Peter affirms the same in I Peter 5:1-2. Clearly, God appoints those who are to be elders.

His Method

But how? What is God's method in calling these men? And how can they know it themselves? The answer is very simple and yet often overlooked: God calls by gifting. In Ephesians 4:11 Paul says that God has given pastors-teachers to the church. They are men gifted with that ability and are themselves gifts to the church. God sovereignly distributes spiritual gifts (I Corinthians 12:11, 18). Some are given the gifts of teaching and ruling and pastoring; such men are elders. In other words, God calls by equipping with the necessary abilities. A man who has no ability to rule or teach has not been called to be an elder (I Timothy 3:2, 4-5); it is that simple. If God calls a man, He also equips him for the task. Giving the necessary abilities and gifts for the task required is a part of God's calling to the work.

According to I Timothy 3:1, one evidence of God's calling of a man to the presbytery (eldership) is a desire for it. This does not mean that anyone with the desire is called; there are many who have had merely a desire to excel or a lust for authority. But it is safe to assume that a person whom God calls to be an elder will have the God-given desire for it.

The first step in becoming an elder is God's. He sovereignly appoints men to this office, equips them accordingly, and places in them an honest desire to serve Him in this way.Appointment

A man duly qualified and who evidences a Divine call is then appointed to an eldership position by the existing elders. The New Testament knows nothing of men becoming pastors by popular vote or any method other than placement by those who were currently ruling.

Luke writes in Acts 14:23 that Paul and Barnabas "appointed elders in every church" and "set them aside" unto that task. This was the case with Timothy, who through the laying on of the hands of the presbytery was gifted for the ministry of the gospel (I Timothy 4:14; II Timothy 1:6). In Titus 1:5 Paul commanded Titus to do this very thing while he was in Crete: "For this cause I left thee in Crete, that thou shouldest put in order the things which are lacking, and appoint elders in every city, as I had appointed thee." Notice that Paul appointed Titus who, in turn, appointed more elders. This pattern may also be what is implied in I Timothy 5:22. In all of these examples the rulers are appointed by the existing rulers.

It is also evident that the elders were not called in from remote places a favorite Bible college, theological seminary, or whatever. They were appointed to serve in their own church where they had proven themselves and demonstrated an ability to teach and lead. With our modern methods of choosing on the basis of one day's meeting, it is no small miracle that it ever works! This is not to say that our modern methods are wrong in every respect, but any comparison shows which method would be more productive.

It should be noted that in Acts 14:23 and Titus 1:5 the Authorized Version (KJV) speaks of "ordaining" elders. This translation is the result of the Anglican ecclesiastical bias of the translators. The Greek word in Acts 14:23 is cheirotoneo which speaks of appointment or selection. The Greek word in Titus 1:5 is kathistemi which simply means to place or to appoint. These verses stress the fact that elders are appointed by those who were previously appointed to the same task. The words have nothing whatever to do with "ordination" as a religious or "ministerial" rite (see John Gill's A Complete Body of Doctrinal and Practical Divinity, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, vol.II, pp. 579-584).Tenure of Service

The Scriptural passages involved indicate that the appointment to eldership is a permanent one: nothing is said to limit the appointments to a particular tenure of service. God equips the man for service, and the man, in turn, gives his life to it until, for whatever reasons, he is no longer able to perform the duties required.Disqualifications

It is clear, by the nature of the case, that a man who does not meet these requirements or who at some time fails to meet them is not qualified for the office. Furthermore, one implication of I Timothy 5:19-20 is that it may become necessary for the other elders to judge that a man duly qualified for the office has become disqualified by reason of some personal sin or character flaw.

This is a very serious matter, and it must be recognized that only Scriptural reason is sufficient justification for such disqualification. The all-too-well-known custom of dismissing a pastor by the whim of a church board or a majority opinion is a prideful rising above the authority and sufficiency of Scripture. Moreover, a Church's constitution which allows such action is also clearly in error. A man's standing with regard to eldership can be and must be determined on the basis of Scripture alone.

These being the principal doctrines establishing the position, qualities, role, responsibilities, tenure and disqualification; elders at CSBC will live out these doctrines before God and man. Elders will hold each other accountable before God. Every two years we agree to evaluate each other based on these qualities, role, and responsibilities to ensure that we remain qualified to serve.

WHAT TIME DOES THE SERVICE BEGIN? Our worship service begins at 10:30 a.m. each Sunday morning.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR? Wear something comfortable. We are interested in you as a person, not your clothes. If you dress casually, you will fit right in.

WHAT IS A SERVICE LIKE? Upon entering the auditorium, an usher will welcome you and hand you an information guide about the service and church happenings. You can choose a seat, sit back, relax, and enjoy the service. From this point on, it's hard to know what to expect. We may do a skit, we may show a commercial, there may be a video vignette, maybe a banner presentation or interpretive worship. We will use whatever tools it takes to help you understand the Bible and how to get to know Jesus better.

There are a few constants. You will have a chance to celebrate and worship with uplifting live music from our band. You can count on a message that applies to your life and one that will encourage you to reach beyond your current grasp. You can also count on a ministry team, led by our pastors, that will always available for you after each service.

Decisions That Define Us - Home

This is not a Statement of Faith. Our Statement of Faith remains the same. This is a set of decisions that help define our identity and clarify our goals as a church. These decisions are not a reaction to anything. They are not criticisms of any church or movement and are not meant as weapons toward others. These decisions are not a theology about what we are against but a theology of what we are for!

We would probably have said they were true from the beginning of our ministry but now they are defining, fundamental truths about God's will for us in this place - in this generation that we must pursue with passion.

Theses decisions are not arrogant proclamations or accomplishments. We humbly pursue these declarations. We have counted the cost as best we can and now seek to understand the depth of their value as we walk along this journey together.

So then, here are the decisions that we have made:

1. We have decided that teaching the gospel without demonstrating the gospel is not enough. Good preaching, good doctrine, and being good people are not enough.
2. We have decided that having a good church club is not enough, good fellowship is not enough, and just being a member of that club is not enough.
3. We have decided that having good Bible studies is good, but not good enough, that just making it to heaven is not our goal, and that knowing about God without truly knowing and experiencing God is meaningless. The answer is not to stop teaching but to start practicing.
4. We have decided that having good programs is not enough; that change without transformation is intolerable, and that staying the same is not an option. We are not opposed to structure but we are opposed to programs that replace a living vital relationship with Christ with a form of Godliness that denies His power.
5. We have decided that gifting without character is futile.
6. We have decided to emphasize a change of heart. We do not want people to comply in outwardly visible areas and yet ignore the often more important areas involving omission, selfishness, and materialism.
7. We have decided that singing songs without worshipping is hollow and having meetings without God showing up is pointless.
8. We have decided that having faith without works is dead faith and having works without love is legalism - that our function comes out of our relationship first with the Father and second with each other.
9. We have decided that reading the book of Acts without living the book of Acts is unthinkable.
10. We have decided that confident faith is good and bold/courageous faith is better.
11. We have decided that hearing about the Holy Spirit without experiencing Him is silly, that believing in His presence without seeing It manifested in signs and wonders is hypocrisy, that believing in healing without seeing peopled healed is absurd, and that believing in deliverance without people being delivered is absolutely ridiculous.
12. We have decided to be Holy Spirit filled, Holy Spirit led, and Holy Spirit empowered - anything less doesn't work for us.
13. We have decided to be the ones telling the stories of God's power - not the ones hearing about them.
14. We have decided that living saved, but not supernatural is living below our privilege and short of what Christ died for.
15. We have decided that we are a battleship not a cruise liner, an army, not an audience; special forces not spectators, missionaries not club members.
16. We have decided to value both pioneers and settlers - pioneers to expand our territory and settlers to build on those territories - but we are not squatters - people who take up space others have fought for without improving it.
17. We have decided to be infectious instead of innocuous, contagious instead of quarantined, deadly instead of benign.
18. We have decided to be radical lovers and outrageous givers.
19. We have decided that we are a mission station and not a museum.
20. We have decided to bless the work of other believers and other churches in our community and to pray for their success. We are not in competition with other believers or other churches and their success does not mean that our work is failing. There are enough people perishing all around to fill every church. We do not consider trading members with other churches to be progress in building the kingdom of God.
21. We have decided it is better to fail while reaching for the impossible that God has planned for us than succeed settling for less. We have decided that we will not be satisfied until the world freaks out and cries out, "Those who have turned the world upside down have come here too."
22. We have decided that the marketplace is a ministry calling and that wherever God has us vocationally; we will live out our faith and God given ministry.
23. We have decided that we all have areas of influence and we pray, evangelize, and disciple with passion within our circles. We will not depend on someone else or some program to do what God has given us the ability and authority to do. We are all priests.

Therefore:
1. We honor the past. We don't live in it.
2. We live in the present with our eyes on the future.
3. We see past events, successes, and failures as stepping stones and not stop signs.
4. We pursue learning in order to be transformed, not learning in order to know.
5. We are a people of engagement not observation.
6. We focus on what could be - not what is or has been.
7. We are not limited to the four walls of this building. Our influence is not restricted by location - not even the nations are out of bounds.
8. We are more concerned with how many we send out into the world than how many we convince to come into the building. This building is meant to be filled and it will be, but it will not be the measure of who we are or the measure of our effectiveness.
9. We raise up world changers, not tour guides. We train commandos, not committees.
10. We are people of our destiny, not our history.
11. We are a volunteer army, fighting by choice. Sometimes we are wounded but always advancing, storming the gates of hell.

These decisions are not destinations but rather journeys along an ancient path. We have not found some new way but rather rediscovered the path as old as Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The same path followed by Moses, Joshua, and Caleb, Paul, John, and Peter. The path followed by the first century church. It is a church that revolutionized the culture of the first century and beyond. It is a path that will impact the world we live in today. It is a path of liberty, freedom, healing, significance, purpose, and destiny. This is a path less traveled, however, it is not a path only available to a select few but to "whosoever will may come." It is for all nations, tribes, and tongues, for those in any occupation or vocation. No matter where you are in your life journey, there is room on this path for you.

Our youth meet every Sunday at 4:00 p.m. in Room 212 at the church building for a time of prayer and ministry for one another. On Wednesday, meetings are held at 7:00 p.m. in Room 212 at the church building for teaching and open discussion. Our objective is to raise up Christians who know the Bible and live it out.

Each month the youth participate in activities such as paint ball, concerts, movies, Carowinds and retreats. We also attend an annual summer camp. It is exciting to see what God is doing in the youth at CSBC. We have seen what God can do when the Holy Spirit is invited in our youth's lives. We do not want the youth to wait until they are in their twenties or thirties to have an impact on our world. God can and is using them NOW!

For more information on our youth, please contact Jordan Bishop at 377-7149 or by email jordieb7183@yahoo.com.

Why Small Groups? - Small Groups

Small groups typically meet in each other's homes and generally include a time of casual family-type fun and fellowship, and the study of God's word and how it can be applied to your particular needs and circumstances. We do have some groups that meet at CSBC. Small groups are a place for each member to share their joys and struggles, praises and prayer requests. In a small group environment, deep trust and unconditional acceptance help to form a firm foundation upon which life-long friendships and significant spiritual growth can happen. We believe small groups are essential to the growth of Christ's church today as our witness is in our workplace and the communities in which we live. It's one way in which we minister to the needs of the body while growing fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.

If you interested in joining or starting a new small group, please contact Bill Stallings at bstallings@chestersecondbaptist.com or call the church office at 803-377-7149.

We provide well-trained and screened workers for our children from birth to fifth grade during our worship services. The greeters in the atrium will help you register your child and will escort you to your child's age appropriate classroom. You can find out about our older youth ministry links on this website as well.

Wednesday Evenings 6:45-8:15 p.m.

The heart of AWANA is the gospel message of salvation. Children are clearly taught the plan of salvation and memorize scripture verses to support their understanding. It is a true joy to see children excited about participating in games, memory verses and learning about God.

Council Time is held in all clubs and is a devotional time that allows for group discussions and lessons from the scripture.

During Game Time, the children work in teams to reach a goal. The importance of being a "team player" is emphasized.

During Handbook Time, children receive a handbook that contains Bible verses to memorize and activities to do. For more information, please contact Melissa Lindsey at 377-7149 or email molucy@hotmail.com.
